Teaching philosophy

My teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that students are knowledge holders who bring valuable experiences and perspectives to their learning. I adopt a student-centered approach that recognises the diverse needs, interests, and sociological insights that emerge from students' varied backgrounds and lived experiences.

In my classroom, I create space for critical dialogue where students engage with sociological concepts by examining their own perspectives alongside those of their peers. This approach allows us to build a more comprehensive understanding of complex social issues while developing students' capacity for critical thinking and analysis.

I view education as preparation for meaningful engagement with real-world challenges. Through discussion and collaborative learning, students connect personal experiences with broader social structures. I aim to facilitate student learning, so that they become thoughtful citizens who can critically analyse social phenomena and contribute to positive social change.

Central to my practice is a commitment to student wellbeing and success. I approach teaching relationally, seeking to understand each student's educational goals, motivations, and challenges. By creating supportive learning environments where diverse perspectives are valued, I help students develop the analytical skills essential for understanding our complex social world.

‘I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for all your support and guidance throughout this Media Ecologies unit. Your teaching helped me see media in a completely new way, and I really appreciated the space you created for thoughtful discussion and critical thinking. I especially enjoyed learning about how different media systems interact and evolve, and I've genuinely taken away a lot from this class that I'll carry forward in my studies and creative projects. Thank you again for your encouragement, patience, and clear explanations during the trimester.’ - 3rd year media ecologies student, 2025.

‘I'm going to be honest and say that, going into the subject, I didn't know what to expect because this was out of my comfort zone. But when I actually come up with an idea and start developing it, the subject becomes more and more engaging. I get to learn so much about how to research and after this course, I appreciate all the works of scholars even more. Enqi was my tutor and she's amazing. It is easy to get a grasp of what she is teaching and I would say she was very involved in the students' works and made sure to provide help whenever needed. I really appreciate that. Thank you Enqi and the teaching team for a good semester!’ - final year media & communications student, 2024.
